On Recently Released Corporate Scope 3 Standards

apicsOn Monday, October 24, 2011, firm President Robert Kuhn will speak about the just-released “Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard for Accounting and Reporting Greenhouse Gas Emissions” at the APICS (The Association for Operations Management) 2011 International Conference + Expo at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in Pittsburgh, PA.

The session is part of the Conference’s “Sustainability” track and consistent with this year’s Conference theme, “Achieving Sustainable Productivity: Meeting Customer Demand in an Unpredictable World.”

The Scope 3 Accounting and Reporting Standard is a newly-developed tool that will enable companies to measure and report the carbon footprint associated with their entire value chain, not just the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with their internal operations. This is a big step forward, as we’re learning that for many companies the bulk of their carbon footprint is in their supply and distribution and not in their operations. Having a well-regarded standard measuring and reporting this environmental impact will go a long way toward the ultimate goal of lessening overall GHG emissions from business activity. This is the third time Robert has presented on this subject. As a member of the GHG Protocol’s “Stakeholder Advisory Group,” Robert was involved in the development of the Scope 3 and Product Standards. His firm is also currently undertaking a Scope 3 assessment for one of the U.S.’s major fashion houses.
